Background

Built as a special edition of the much-loved Alfa Romeo GTV to commemorate the single-make Alfa GTV Cup race series, a total of 419 Alfa Romeo GTV Cup cars were built, split between 264 Left-hand-drive and 155 right-hand-drive models. This makes the RHD models in particular very rare and desirable, especially considering they were all fitted with the 3.0-litre 24v V6 engine.

Benefitting from a number of upgrades over the standard GTVs, all of the changes were purely cosmetic in nature, as the GTV Cup cars retained standard running gear.

The Pininfarina-styled bodywork remained largely the same, but was differentiated by the addition of a more aggressive bodykit, which included front and rear spoilers, side skirts and vents in the front wing, behind the wheel arch. In addition to the kit, this limited-edition model also gained a set of 17-inch ‘telephone dial’ alloys.

Each car is numbered individually, and signified via a plaque on the dash. With only 155 made in RHD format, this is a rare opportunity to get your hands on a genuine GTV cup car with the steering wheel on the ‘correct’ side.

Overview

Car number 102 of the 155 right-hand-drive cars, this car has been clearly looked after throughout its life, and shows a genuine low milage reading of just 29,974 miles on the odometer.

Right-hand-drive GTV Cups are a rare proposition as it is, but to find one in such incredible condition is a very rare occurrence indeed, making this a very unusual and desirable example.

Fitted with the 3.0 24v V6 engine - as all RHD Cup cars were - the soundtrack to this gorgeous Italian sports car is revered the world over, and in combination with the slick six-speed manual gearbox, it provides a wonderful driving experience. There is a reason that Mr Jeremy Clarkson says “you’re not a real petrolhead, unless you’ve owned an Alfa Romeo!”

Bought by the vendor around three years ago after spending months searching, this example was the best condition car on the market at the time, and we’d wager that statement still rings true today.

Completely standard barring a (unregistered) tracker and wired trickle charger, this is a thoroughly original, true ‘time warp’ condition GTV Cup, and deserves to go to a loving home.

Exterior

Finished in the eye-catching shade of Rosso Alfa (Alfa Romeo Red), the condition of this GTV Cup is fantastic. The panel lines are all nice and evenly matched, while the paintwork is in great condition, barring a few small chips and age-related marks. This is a 20-year old car, after all, but presents fantastically regardless.

The 17-inch ‘Teledial’ wheels are all in great shape with no signs of kerbing or other damage, with the unusual design both being an Alfa trademark, and showing off the Brembo calipers behind to their full extent.

With red cars of this age often subject to sun bleaching and paint fade, it’s refreshing to see one that not only doesn’t suffer with either of the aforementioned issues thanks to always being garaged in its current ownership, but also comes complete with its own Alfa Romeo-branded car cover - a great sign of a fastidious owner.

Interior

Inside, the fantastic condition continues, with the eye-catching silver numbered build plaque catching your attention the moment you open the drivers door, reminding you that you’re behind the wheel of something very special indeed.

The GTV Cup cars benefitted from half-leather, half-cloth trim, and as a result many of them have faired far better than their full-leather counterparts. Showing virtually no signs of ageing or the usual bolster damage, the interior is in simply superb condition throughout.

All of the carpets, headliner and switchgear are in great condition with very little - if any - signs of usage, which is likely due to a series of careful owners and the low milage of the car, with the only minor signs of use being on the passenger side of the centre console, and the usual scuffs on the door cards.

Everything is working correctly, with no reported faults, warning lights or other issues. Thanks to being permanently connected to a trickle charger whilst in the vendor’s ownership, the electrical systems are in fine fettle.

Mechanical

Open the sculpted bonnet of the car, and you’re greeted with a gorgeous 3.0-litre, 24V V6 engine. The polished headers, contrasting red ‘Alfa Romeo’ script and surprisingly attractive layout of the engine tells you that Alfa genuinely cared about their products, and the results are a fantastic sight to behold.

Everything looks to be tip-top under the bonnet, with the vendor also reporting that there are no issues with the car mechanically. The engine is also one of the biggest assets of the GTV Cup cars, with that V6 revving freely and creating an incredible soundtrack in the process.

Moving underneath the car, there are no signs of major leaks, seepage or other concerns, with only some minor staining on the front under tray. Having passed every single MOT since 2007 and with no advisories since 2013, it’s clear that this GTV Cup is in tip-top shape, and ready to be enjoyed.

History

With rare and limited-edition models such as this, history is everything. Thankfully, this example has a fully-stamped service book which you can track the milage through.

In addition to the service history, the V5 is present, and there is also a plethora of old MOT certificates, Alfa Romeo documentation and handbooks, and plenty of invoices for work carried out.

Of note are several invoices from both Alfa and Italian-marque specialists, which shows that throughout its life the car has been well cared-for in the hands of knowledgeable technicians - a wonderful sign for any potential buyer. The vendor states that the timing belt was changed around four or five years ago, within the last 2,000 miles.

We include an online HPI report run at the auction start which shows no finance outstanding and no insurance markers for theft or damage.

Summary

As we’ve stated, GTV Cup cars are a rare thing, and to find one both in right-hand-drive and in such fantastic condition as the one we have here is even rarer.

Presenting with full service history, no known faults and having enjoyed the custodianship of numerous fastidious owners, this is a fantastic and unusual opportunity to get your hands on one of the most sought-after GTV models. We estimate £14,500 - £18,500.

Strap in, start the car and enjoy the delights of that wonderful V6 engine. Or, just simply look at those stunning Pininfarina lines; Either way, this is the GTV Cup you’ve been waiting for - happy bidding!
