Background

The Alfa Romeo 2000 GT Veloce (also known as the GTV) was introduced in 1971 in both convertible and coupe forms. A replacement for the 1750, the increase in engine size saw power up to 132PS at around 5,500 rpm. Fuel injection was fitted for the American and Canadian markets, with carburettors retained for the Europeans.

The eagle-eyed will be able to spot the different grille, which became standard on the Junior ranges too from 1974.

The interior trim also got a makeover, the biggest difference being the introduction of a separate instrument cluster, instead of the gauges installed in the dash panel in earlier cars.

There can be no doubt that the 2000 GTV is one of the prettiest cars ever made, the delicate proportions being something that modern car designers can now only dream about.

The peppy engine was mated to a slick five-speed gearbox and in true Alfa style, this was a driver’s car through and through.

In total almost 35,000 2000 GTVs were made with production finally ending in 1977, though by then the cars were being made in South Africa.

Good GTVs are getting harder and harder to find. Well, look no more as we have an absolute beauty for sale.

Overview

Our left-hand drive GTV rolled down the production line in 1971 and spent the bulk of its life in France with two loving owners. It has not been fully restored but it has been repainted we are told, and is in remarkably fine condition.

We do know the car was kept off the road for many years before being recommissioned in 2010.

Our seller, the car’s third owner, bought the car three years ago and since then it has resided in the Principality of Monaco. The car is registered with the Alfa Romeo Club of Monaco.

Last year the Alfa was subject to great expense and underwent, amongst things, an engine rebuild by an Italian car specialist and we are told that it now drives as well as it looks.

So, an original GTV, in good order, a low number of careful owners and it is a matching numbers car too. Now we’ve got your interest!

Exterior

We are informed that this lovely GTV still sports its original colour. That being the case, the condition is remarkable. Yes, there are some very minor areas that we have spotted, such as some very small paint bubbles on the boot lid and one of the front wings does have some surface scratches. These are but mere details and do not spoil the overall effect.

A dry climate and correct storage have clearly been instrumental in preserving this Italian classic in such fine condition. And let’s not forget that the car has covered a mere 89,000kms in its 50-year life.

There’s plenty of shiny chrome to be seen, very little showing any signs of wear and tear. Shut lines are neat, panel gaps precise and even, and the car sits squarely on the road.

The wheels do have some minor surface marks when you get up close and could be improved. Tyres are a mixture of Continentals and Savas, all with ample tread.

Badges are all present and correct, our favourite being the ‘disegno by Bertone’, just in case you were in any doubt who designed this pretty car.

Interior

If the originality of the Alfa’s exterior has impressed, then the interior will absolutely dazzle. The seats are original and in excellent order, the only flaw being a very small tear in the driver’s seat bolster.

The tan door cards are blemish free, the wood dash and centre console more or less unmarked. It is certain that the car will have been always stored safely, away from the sun’s damaging rays when not in use.

The gorgeous wooden steering wheel takes centre stage and falling easily to hand is the spindly gear lever, ideal for the many snappy gearchanges that are all part of classic Alfa Romeo driving.

The Jaeger instruments are a delight and convey all the necessary information which includes the oil pressure.

If we must be picky, we have spotted a trace of corrosion to the front left hand interior quarterlight, an easy fix should it bother you.

There’s a surprisingly large boot which amongst other things houses a full-size spare wheel.

Mechanical

We always include a selection of photographs of a car’s underside in our listings and this is the case here. It would seem unlikely that the Alfa has ever been driven in the wet and all that is visible is a trace of surface corrosion in a few places.

Should the new owner wish to drive the car all year round, then some form of gentle underseal should be carefully applied to help preserve the condition.

Wheel arches, an area that normally suffers from the ravages of time look to be fine too.

Pop the bonnet and a sparkling engine bay will greet. We know the engine itself was rebuilt last year and no doubt the whole area was cleaned whilst the work was carried out. All the signs of careful maintenance are clearly visible such as new HT leads and a modern battery.

Our seller says that he is not aware of any faults with the car and reports that it is an absolute pleasure to drive. What’s for sure, it’s a head turner par excellence!

History

Just three owners, never restored, this car has clearly had a gentle life.

In the photo gallery there is a large invoice for work carried out in 2008, but perhaps of more relevance is the invoice from 2020.

The latter relates to the complete renovation of the engine, carried out by an Italian car specialist. We believe the clutch was rebuilt at the same time.

Summary

A car is only original once and to find a fifty-year-old Alfa Romeo in this condition is almost a once in a lifetime opportunity.

The perfectionist might want to address the very few minor cosmetic issues, but in our opinion, we would be inclined to enjoy the car just as it is.

With the recent engine work done, the Alfa now drives as well as it looks and will surely delight both the collector or someone who just wants to own and drive a classic Alfa Romeo GT Veloce.

All this Italian goodness does come at a price, and we expect the car to sell for between 34,000 and 40,000 Euros.

Viewing is always encouraged. The car is located with the vendor in Monte Carlo, Monaco. To arrange an appointment please use the ‘Contact Seller’ button at the top of the listing. You won’t be disappointed!
