Background

Produced from 1963 to 1975 in more than 225,000 examples, the Alfa Romeo Giulia GT represents one of the Milanese manufacturer's greatest successes, as well as one of its most iconic models and today most coveted by classic car enthusiasts. Based on the Giulia sedan of the 1960s, a car remained famous for the exuberance of its four-cylinder DOHC engines and for its brilliant and safe drive, the coupe version enhances these sporty characteristics, also thanks to breathtaking lines and class-leading handling. Gritty and incredibly fast in all its versions - from the "1600" Sprint GT of the early days to the powerful "2000" of the GT Veloce, via the exuberant "1750" and the smaller "1300" - this car owes much of its fame to the extraordinary successes garnered by the GTA and GTAm versions set up at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s by Autodelta, Alfa Romeo's racing team, to compete in the most important international touring car competitions.

Overview

This Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior, identified by chassis number AR1284473, was registered in Italy, in the province of Gorizia (a city whose original license plates it still retains), in 1972. It is therefore the penultimate series of the model, the one produced between 1971 and 1973. It is immediately recognizable by its typical front end with only two round headlights positioned towards the edges of the fenders and the absence of the famous "step" on the hood (a distinctive mark of the first series models with 1.3 and 1.6-litre engines). The car on sale is accompanied by a certificate of origin issued by Alfa Romeo historic department and a certificate of historical relevance issued by Asi (Automotoclub storico Italiano). This Alfa is fitted with a lowered suspension and the limited-slip differential, which at the time was an option on the more powerful 132 HP 2.0 litre. The car is currently equipped with that engine, but it comes also with the original "1300". The odometer shows a mileage of 7668 km.

Exterior

It took a lot of hard work to make this Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior shine again, but it was worth it. The accompanying pictures of the lot portray a car in very good order. This result was possible thanks to a thorough and deep restoration of the bodywork in which - the owner told us - some parts previously repaired not so good were deeply refurbished. Traces of red paint were present on some parts of the car, but the historical research conducted by the parent company itself revealed that the original colour was Piper yellow: this is a colour with notes of champagne offered by Alfa from 1972 along with metallic olive green and the more vibrant Le Mans blue. In any case, both the treatment of the sheet metal and its painting appear to have been perfectly done. Also conforming to the original specifications are the chrome-plated bumper blades, which are sharper and squarer than those on earlier versions of this model and - as this is an example that benefited from the 1972 facelift - also the iron wheels with concave hubcaps and exposed bolts and the two additional horizontal air inlets under the front bumper.

Interior

Things looked fine also inside: the cockpit of this classic Alfa seems to be in excellent condition, and not only in the most visible parts. Lifting the carpet mats, for example, shows that the floor is perfectly sound. The headliner is also well-stretched and, in general, there are no particular signs of wear. The faux-leather upholstered seats look like new, while the rear sofa is new in the truest sense of the word: it was recently replaced and it looks as if no one has ever sat back there since. The whole thing is embellished with the iconic Hellébore three-spoke sports steering wheel with its unmistakable wooden crown, standard at the time on the most powerful and expensive 1750 GT Veloce and optional for the smaller "1300." The glove compartment in front of the passenger seat appears slightly cracked, while the door panels are intact and properly secured. The spare tire compartment and, more generally, all internal sheet metal parts seem also okay.

Mechanical

The underside of the GT 1300 Junior is a pretty sight. Judging from the pictures, under the "dress" the car looks really good: there is not even a thread of rust. The 2.0-litre engine also seems to be in great shape and it is equipped with a pair of perfectly cleaned and adjusted Dell’Orto carburettors as part of a tune-up in which - the vendor assured us - nothing was overlooked. The engine oil was changed less than a year ago, while the transmission benefited from a complete overhaul. Also completely overhauled is the original 1300 engine, which has never yet been started since it was refurbished.

History

According to information in Alfa Romeo's production records and listed in the certificate of origin accompanying the car, this Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior was produced on December 19, 1972, and sold just eight days later in Trieste. The registration card shows that the car has had at least four owners, the last of whom purchased it in 2018 and provided for a complete body restoration, also taking care of the interior and of both engines with which it is sold. The car is supplied with an extensive photo gallery showing the overhaul of the 1.3 engine and transmission and the coachwork carried out in 2022.

Summary

It is hard for a true lover of the Alfa Romeo brand to wish for more: the Giulia Sprint GT is one of the most beautiful, fascinating and engaging driving cars ever to come out of the gates of the Milanese factory. This example, in particular, has the great advantage of having been completely restored and very nicely repainted in its original colour. The lowered suspension and the limited-slip differential, in addition, are a plus for sportier drivers, as is the 2.0-litre engine, powerful and quick in revving up and still today capable of giving an extraordinary performance. In short, the ingredients for having fun and attracting admiring glances from passers-by, behind the wheel of this Alfa, are all there.
