Amongst the Alfa Romeo cognoscenti, one of the most coveted is the 105 series coupe of the mid-1960s. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, they carry the nickname ‘step nose’ which stems from the ¼ inch gap between the leading edge of the bonnet and the nose. The Italian ‘scalino’ sounds so much better!
Giugiaro designed the svelte body and Alfa Romeo then created a shortened version of the Giulia saloon platform. Under the bonnet sat an Alfa Twin Cam engine, an all-alloy unit with double overhead cams, a cross-flow head and two valves per cylinder.
In 1965 the Sprint GT Veloce was introduced. Veloce, meaning speed in Italian, was chosen as the model suffix as the upgraded twin-cam engine produced a little more power and a lot more torque.
A five-speed gearbox came as standard, sending power to the rear wheels. Disc brakes to all four wheels gave the GT Veloce superb stopping power.
This is a car that offers good looks, performance and undoubted investment potential and will appeal to the discerning enthusiast.
