Background

Amongst the Alfa Romeo cognoscenti, one of the most coveted is the 105 series coupe of the mid-1960s. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, they carry the nickname ‘step nose’ which stems from the ¼ inch gap between the leading edge of the bonnet and the nose. The Italian ‘scalino’ sounds so much better!

Giugiaro designed the svelte body and Alfa Romeo then created a shortened version of the Giulia saloon platform. Under the bonnet sat an Alfa Twin Cam engine, an all-alloy unit with double overhead cams, a cross-flow head and two valves per cylinder.

In 1965 the Sprint GT Veloce was introduced. Veloce, meaning speed in Italian, was chosen as the model suffix as the upgraded twin-cam engine produced a little more power and a lot more torque.

A five-speed gearbox came as standard, sending power to the rear wheels. Disc brakes to all four wheels gave the GT Veloce superb stopping power.

This is a car that offers good looks, performance and undoubted investment potential and will appeal to the discerning enthusiast.

Overview

This car has spent much of its gentle life in Guernsey and was imported back to the UK mainland in 2018. The Channel Islands owner was an avid car collector, and we are told the Alfa was the jewel in his collection – quite understandable.

Although now painted red, the car originally left the factory in ‘grigio grafite’, or grey to non-Italian speakers.

The bumpers have been removed for that more sporting look, though these ultra-rare items (which are in good condition) are included in the sale should the purchaser wish to reinstate them.

The mileometer reads a little over 56,000 miles.

Exterior

The car underwent extensive restoration at the time of the colour change, we think around ten years ago, you can see pictures of the bare metal work in the gallery. We note now that there are signs of microblistering and paint bubbling on the bonnet, front wings and boot lid. The blistering is most pronounced on the roof.

The boot lid appears to be in need of some readjustment.

The wheel arches have some flaky paint on the edges and the right-hand front wing has some surface rust.

A good look at the photographs is recommended.

It would therefore appear time for the new owner to spend some money at a bodyshop and it will be money well spent. It also presents and excellent opportunity to return the car to its original, and dare we say, unusual colour.

Interior

A classic Alfa interior is always a delight. The delightful thin-rimmed wooden steering wheel, the long spindly gear lever and wood dash hark back to a simpler time.

The seats are in fair condition, showing a few signs of their advancing years, such as the driver’s seat piping being torn. The seats we are told are rare items, originally from a GTV Mark 1.

There is also some leather hanging down between the steering column and the side of the car.

The driver’s side window is loose, and this would need some investigation.

Everything works, not a given in Italian cars of a certain age.

The carpets look to be in good condition.

Mechanical

The beating heart of this Alfa, the powerful engine, looks absolutely fabulous. It is an upgraded 2.0-litre ‘Nord’ unit with bags of power for a spirited drive. It is sure to impress. There are 150 horses waiting to be unleashed and the addition of a limited slip differential is there to help put all that power down.

Sadly, the rest of the engine bay looks rather tired and in need of a general spruce up. The paint is somewhat flaky.

The GTA-style wheels, although not original, appear to be in good order and the tyres have plenty of tread on them.

The chassis looks to be in fair condition, though we would recommend redoing the underseal in places to ensure full protection from the elements.

The free flow stainless steel exhaust is in good order and sounds great!

History

As we have mentioned, the car underwent extensive restoration some time ago.

In addition, there are some invoices for work carried out, copies of which can be seen in the photograph section.

The vendor did a little track day work and one of the invoices shows work carried out in preparation for the great day. It was a thrilling day, the car being beautifully balanced and a joy to drive.

Summary

This is a very solid example of an ultra-rare Italian classic. In good mechanical order, it is being reluctantly sold by an enthusiast vendor who sadly does not now have the time to enjoy her.

It drives beautifully, with a soundtrack to stir the soul, and those achingly gorgeous Giugiaro lines still have the ability to turn heads.

Money spent on the bodywork will easily be recouped in terms of the increase in value and we think this car offers excellent investment potential. Find another Giulia Sprint Veloce if you can.

So, raid the piggy bank, place your bids. We estimate £33,000 - £38,000.
