Background

There comes a time in life when you need to ask yourself the question. Am I really a car enthusiast? If you answer in the affirmative, and you’ve never owned an Alfa, we are not sure that this can be true.

But where to start? May we politely suggest a GT 1600 Junior, surely one of the most achingly beautiful cars ever made.

The ‘Junior’ was introduced in 1972, to plug the gap between the GT 1300 Junior and the larger engine 2000 GTV.

Power was courtesy of a naturally aspirated 1,600cc engine, featuring double overhead camshaft valve gear, a four-cylinder layout and 2 valves per cylinder. It pushed out a heady 107bhp at 6,000rpm, with 115lb/ft of torque at around 2,800rpm. Top speed was claimed to be 115mph.

Rear-wheel drive and a five -speed manual transmission completed the picture and endeared the Alfa with driving characteristics that other manufacturers of the day could only dream about.

That lovely engine was designed to rev, and what joy there was to be had. The gearshift has a sweet and precise action, something that is somewhat lacking in modern day cars.

The chassis is beautifully balanced too, making the Alfa Romeo Junior an absolute delight to hurl about on a favourite B-road. Engaging, thrilling and deeply pleasurable on an emotional and physical level.

Can you tell we rather like the awesome Alfa?

Overview

We are delighted to be offering for sale a prime example of a GT 1600 Junior and what better colour could there be than red. Alfa Romeo red so say the records, and this is complemented very nicely with an anthracite interior.

The car was supplied originally to Alfa Romeo in London in August 1975 and the company has confirmed that the car is still fitted with its original engine and gearbox.

Our owner, an Alfa man at heart we would suggest, has owned the car for around six years. As is so often the case, he has decided that it is time for a change, so his loss may well be your gain.

The purchase of this car was a considered one, our seller having enjoyed a brief flirtation with a GT Junior back in the 1980s as a company car.

When not in use, the car has enjoyed the luxury of a heated garage and a bespoke car cover, the aim of course to preserve the car’s condition at all costs.

Amongst the highlights of our seller’s ownership, was a 250-miles classic Lombard RAC rally, non-competitive you understand. The car performed faultlessly and was a joy both to drive and behold.

Shortly after purchase, our seller commissioned a full respray and earlier this month the car had an engine rebuild and new clutch. As such, this lovely Alfa is all revved up and ready to go.

Exterior

As mentioned, the car was sent for a full respray some six years ago and we must say that the paint still has a great shine.

There are a few small surface scratches, swirl marks most likely and these may well polish out. There are also some very slight ripples on the rear left quarter panel.

The roof looks fine, just a tad orange peely perhaps if we are being picky.

We note some tiny micro blisters on the nearside C pillar and the front left side of the scuttle panel between the windscreen and the bonnet.

The bumpers are generally good, with just some light scratches in places. Time to get out the chrome cleaner no doubt. The chrome on the door handles is a tad pitted too.

Inside the headlights we have spotted a small amount of corrosion on their surrounds.

The wheels look great, and we note that two new tyres were fitted by our seller in March 2019.

Interior

We can see from invoices, that much money has been lavished over the years on the Alfa’s interior. A new headlining has been fitted, along with new door panels and carpets.

Also replaced were the seat covers with items for a 2000GTV. They look very smart and new seat belts were also fitted to keep you firmly in place.

The driving position is typically Italian, though really quite comfortable. The floor-hinged clutch and brake pedal will take a little getting used to.

We note the interior door handle on the driver’s side is loose and the door cannot be opened using the interior handle. The vendor believes that it simply needs a new grub screw, a simple job, but one which our seller hadn’t got around to fixing.

The panel on the dash where a radio would be fitted is slightly damaged, but other than that there is little to criticise and much to complement.

The boot area would benefit from some carpeting and the exposed paintwork is somewhat tired. There is full size spare wheel fitted under the floor.

Mechanical

Lift the bonnet and that lovely 1,600cc engine is revealed in all its glory. Fresh from some £4,000 worth of work, which includes the fitment of a new clutch, the car has covered but a handful of miles since. The new owner will need to complete a short period of running in to allow everything to settle down, and possibly a tune up.

The engine compartment itself is reasonably tidy, with just a few areas of flaky paintwork letting the side down. A full detail would be lovely, an easy Sunday afternoon job.

We have included plenty of photographs of the Alfa’s underside for your delectation and it all looks remarkably good to us. A bit of a clean up and perhaps the application of some more underseal in places, just to be sure. Our seller never used the car in wet conditions, but you may well want to.

The underside of the front scuttle has been dented and could do with a little remedial action.

History

Oh, how we like a lovely pile of paperwork and thanks to the careful filing of previous owners, there is plenty to accompany this Alfa.

Renowned parts specialist Classic Alfa has done very well in terms of sales. Amongst the bit and pieces supplied are:

*Headlining kit

*Door panels

*Carpet set

*Seat belts

*Gear lever gaiter

*Brake discs

*Fuel pump

We also note a bill for a new fuel tank and cap.

Earlier this month, Paul Nash Racing in High Wycombe was charged with the engine and gearbox work. The cylinder head was removed and cleaned, the valves removed, refaced and reassembled.

The sump was removed, oil pump cleaned and inspected. At the same time a new clutch was fitted.

Our seller reports that the car has been rejuvenated and boasts much more power. So much so that he contemplated whether he really wanted to part with it!

The car is of course now MoT exempt but included in the file are many old certificates which help to verify the car’s indicated low mileage.

Summary

On looks alone, this Alfa Romeo GT Junior is hard to beat, but get behind the wheel and that’s where the fun really starts. It’s a car to stir the soul and emotions and the complete antithesis to most modern-day offerings.

It is truly a car to take out for the sake of it, a car to excite the senses.

There’s room for four people, a boot capable of holding enough luggage for a touring holiday and last but most importantly, the car has been subject to much recent expense.

All you must do is put in a bid and win this lovely car and then the fun can really start.

We estimate the car will sell for between £29,500 and £39,500.

Viewing is always encouraged, within government guidelines of course.
