Background

Is there anything more quintessentially American than an Airstream?

Automotively, it’s as embedded in the USA’s national psyche as a Greyhound bus, a Corvette or a Model T.

Representationally, it’s a potent physical metaphor for life under big Mid-Western skies, prairie-scale horizons, epic landscapes and all sorts of bear, wolf, moose, buffalo, cougar, coyote and bandit jeopardy.

Cinematically, it’s a Best Supporting Actor to practically every iconoclastic, maverick or psychotic outsider as portrayed in countless Hollywood incarnations of the drifter, grifter or hipster.

Aesthetically, it’s in a class of its own and, just for once, is something that actually merits use of the word ‘iconic’.

Culturally, it’s got the ‘Stars ‘n’ Stripes’ running through it like a stick of rock and is as evocatively redolent of the US of A as weak beer, powerful guns and terrible cheese.

Actually, however, it’s a brilliantly designed, executed and engineered piece of achingly timeless and stylish mobile real-estate that has captured - and continues to capture - the imaginations of each and every new generation that comes to see, know and inevitably love the uniquely evocative form and idea of the ‘silver bullet’.

First introduced in the early 1930s by Wally Byam, the Airstream was designed to allow people to travel in comfort and style. The early Airstreams were built using aircraft construction techniques which made them lightweight, strong and, unsurprisingly, expensive.

Airstreams very quickly gained a following among well-heeled adventurers and travellers who appreciated their durability, flexibility and adaptability.

During the second world war, Airstream temporarily shifted its production focus to aircraft parts but resumed normal production of travel trailers after the war ended.

Airstreams became hugely popular with families looking for a way to travel, see the country and be connected to the great outdoors.

Airstreams are built to last. Being constructed from high quality materials, they are capable of withstanding years of travel and usage.

This stoic durability is one of the factors that makes them such a popular, and smart, investment for enthusiasts around the world.

In the words of Wally Byam, an Airstream trailer exists “…to stir the venturesome spirit that moves you to follow a rainbow to its end…and thus make your travel dreams come true.”

And we have a sublime example for you right here.

Overview

This magnificent trailer (we call them caravans, Americans call them trailers) has been brought to us by a vendor who knows a great deal about these vehicles.

Not only is she passionate about them, she’s also full of expertise, encyclopaedic knowledge and arcane insights.

In short, she knows her Airstreams – and she knows how to buy the best.

This particular example, with a UK tow-frame, axles and running lights, was converted at eye-watering expense (we’re told over £100k) by Redd Retail into a mobile display unit for Timex watches in 2017.

All appliances are in working condition and the interior is exceptionally clean, tidy and well-designed and built.

It has been polished to such a high state of mirror shine that our photographer has been wearing welding goggles and avoiding daylight ever since he shot it.

It is simply fabulous, inside and out.

Exterior

The bodywork is very good and there are no dents, creases or dinks of any significance to report.

It’s also very, very shiny – as you may have spotted.

You will have also noticed the gull-wing door, which is clearly not a standard Airstream feature.

Not only is the steel-structured door exceptionally well-engineered and built, it also houses the original door which can still be used as Airstream intended when the gull-wing is closed.

The trailer comes with external ‘show’ lighting, external power outlets,

heavy-duty corner wind-down supports, an alarm, and stainless-steel window grilles for security.

The wheels and tyres are as good as the rest of it.

Interior

The good news continues uninterrupted on the exceptionally well-built and finished interior.

Everything is in first-class condition.

Everything works as intended.

Nothing is in need of repairs or other remedial attention.

The interior walls have been professionally sprayed.

The floors are new.

So, too, are the EICR certified electrics.

The ‘Oak’ leather seating is in fine condition.

There is a wide range of lighting options available, including numerous stainless-steel down-lighters.

There are various lockable cupboards.

The trailer comes with full air-conditioning and a 50” LG flat-screen smart TV with a USB port.

Mechanical

This is where the big money has been spent – so you won’t have to.

The trailer comes with a new galvanised chassis fitted in 2017.

It has a high-quality UK-spec tow frame.

It also has new UK axles and running lights, plus a new floor.

It is equipped for solar charging and has a leisure battery.

History

It was built in 1966.

It was restored and converted, with absolutely no expense spared, in 2017 by expert professionals.

This Airstream Tradewind has a full exhibition set-up pack which includes instructions on how to operate all of the appliances.

It also has EICR documentation for compliance.

Summary

It is ready to (i) represent other brands in its capacity as a retail display feature (ii) be converted into a private caravan (iii) begin a new life as an Airbnb venue (iv) become the UK’s classiest street food outlet or (v) do anything else you fancy.

If you want to stay in it, travel in it, live in it, or just be seen (and admired) in scenarios ranging from retail events, festivals and product activations to boutiques, catering, photo booths and weddings, this is surely the best possible way to go.

We like it a great deal.

If you’re ready to join the likes of Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Adrien Brody, Steve Carell, Colin Farrell, Matthew McConaughey, Sean Penn, Brad Pitt, Denzel Washington, Sandra Bullock, Matthew Modine, David Duchovny, Tim Burton and Lenny Kravitz in the very classy club of Airstream ownership, we can’t imagine there’s a better place to start than right here, right now.

We’re confident to offer this trailer for auction with an estimate of £35,000 - £45,000.
