Background

Bob-jobs or Bobbers involved removing stock parts or cutting down, and focusing on the performance rather than the looks, to give a minimalistic clean look which lasted for many years, and is still popular today.

It was in the 1960’s when choppers came along, with their modified frames and expensive paint jobs. Choppers were more about the looks rather than the handling or the braking ability of the bike. From the start, the choice of bike to turn into a chopper usually revolved around a Harley Davidson of some sort, as these were quite cheap and readily available from auctions or army surplus.

Throughout the 70’s the chopper phenomenon grew massively and moved into Europe, where more and more chopper builders emerged, creating more unique bikes and even moving away from the classic Harley Davidson engines, instead using a Honda four cylinder. Less popular through the 80’s -90’s, it was in the 2000’s that things took off again in the chopper world, with the likes of Orange County Choppers and their famous TV show creating one off builds, daring to try new things that would wow chopper fans around the world.

Overview

The vendor of this stunning and unique 2002 Harley Davidson Chopper known as “Draco”, purchased the bike in November 2020. Already a big bike fan, seeing this masterpiece build come up for grabs was an opportunity not to be missed. The bike came into the UK in 2016, and it has had four owners since its arrival. It is believed by the vendor to have been built by a company named AD Choppers, which is thought to have been a spin-off business after the split up of Paul Junior and Senior Tutual and their company Orange County Choppers (OCC).

Quite obviously it no longer resembles the original Harley Davidson it started life as. Instead it has been built using custom bespoke parts, handcrafted to create this unique look.

Exterior

The first thing you notice on the Draco Chopper is the attention to detail, with the striking colour and copious amounts of chrome. The artwork to the panels is in excellent order and finished to an extremely high standard. The look is a dragon whose head is the fuel tank, which continues up to the handle bars and down to the front mudguard. Coming backwards the art work continues down under the seat, and then onto the wide rear mudguard. The frame has also been painted the same, which blends into a darker shade of green as it moves to the lower section of the bike.

The handlebars are custom made with a 4” rise and 7” pull-back, leaving them in the perfect position to be comfortable when ridden. They are finished with polished aluminium ends, which also house the switches for the lights, horn and starting button. Between the handlebars are custom made pods which hold the LCD odometer and tachometer. The headlight is an LED unit which sits nicely between the 230 AD Choppers tapered struts.

Looking from the side, the AD Customs Soft-tail frame has 42 degrees rake and a 7” backbone stretch. This is thought to be based on the original Harley Davidson frame which houses the monstrous 1800cc V-twin Harley engine. At the rear is a 230 AD Choppers swingarm, which is connected to air suspension, enabling you to air out the bike for the extra cool stance points. The air ride is operated by a switch fitted to the underside of the fuel tank. The wheels are highly polished and are 21” at the front and 18” at the rear, as wide as a car wheel, fitted with Metzeler tyres that both have a good amount of tread remaining. Braking is taken care of by 6 piston calipers coupled to cross drilled discs, both to the front and rear.

Interior

The seat on the Harley has been trimmed in Alligator skin and embroidered with the AD Choppers logo.

The grips on the handlebars are, as mentioned, polished aluminium, and lower down the foot pegs have been chromed along with the gear selector and rear brake pedal.

There is a custom made design piece which covers the side of the Hitech drive belt, leaving it exposed and easy to see when moving.

Mechanical

The Chopper has been fitted with a huge S&S sidewinder 1800cc V-Twin Harley engine, which as you can imagine, provides plenty of power and sounds fantastic with the 2-1 custom 3” exhaust system.

Fuel is fed in through a Super E carburettor, which has a K&N conical air filter fitted. Everything on the engine has either been polished or chrome plated to match the rest of the metalwork on the bike.

The raw power is transferred to a 6-speed Baker transmission with overdrive.

This has a dry clutch fitted, which had a BDL clutch hub and the front pulley replaced in 2016. Also in this year, the ignition module was replaced for a programmable Dyna 2000i-P, and finally a new battery was fitted in March 2023.

We have started and run the engine. It required a lot of grunt to get it to turn. We have been advised that a more powerful starter motor and bigger cable to the battery would be a good upgrade.

History

This is a special bike which has been handcrafted by AD Choppers. It was registered new in January 2002, before being transformed into this work of art some years later, and then purchased and brought to the UK. Registered in 2016, Draco was given an MoT, and another one on the 6th September 2016. Since then it has mainly been used to display at shows, and not ridden on the roads.

The V5 is present and shows 4 previous UK keepers. There are just a few invoices for the clutch, battery and ignition module present, plus the previous MoT certificates. One handy piece of paperwork is the instructions for the bike, which explain all the do’s and don’ts regarding owning such a machine.

It does not have a current MoT.

Summary

Well, what a bike! Just from the looks alone there is nobody on the planet who could say there is no attention to detail. Everywhere you look shows another little detail which highlights the quality of the build even more.

It's a bike ready to be enjoyed, and this can be done by appreciating its looks or riding it with it’s 1800cc engine, which will certainly give you the grin factor.

Who’s going to be the one to give this stunning unique chopper a new home? We estimate this Harley Davidson custom chopper will bring in the region of £16,000 - £25,000.
